The first workshop session covers the historical and cultural background of Arimatsu Kanko shibori techniques, Yokobiki Kanoko, Hitome Kanoko, Tsukidashi Kaoko, and their variations. Adaptation and exploration of techniques will be covered in the second session, along with sharing your experiments and samples. Murase-san will demonstrate artisan’s methods of handling traditional tools to help you heighten your ability to create your own hand-dyed textile masterpieces. Yoshiko will moderate, bridging the gap between East and West and traditional and contemporary use of techniques, materials, and processes.
Workshop fee & materials: Fabrics from Japan, History & Technical Information document, and Recording from both classes for you to keep are included in the workshop fee of $350. You will need a Tsukidashi hook, a shibori stand with a Makiage hook attached or sustitue a shibori stand with a large C-Clamp attched to a table, shibori binding thread, and a round wooden bobbin. You will also need a clamp to secure the shibori stand to a table. Recordings from both sessions and all documents and powerpoint presentations will be shared with the class and the students who are in different timezones. During the week between two sessions, you will be given assignments and you may ask questions by email which will be answered and added in the Q&A document which will be shared with the students.
