Weeding Out the Truth: The Role of Medical Cannabis in Missouri, the Body, and Mental Health Conditions

 

Speaker: Kelsey Schwender, Pharm.D.

Upon completion, participants will:

 

·      Understand the history and role of cannabis in United States and Missouri legislature.

·      Describe the cannabis plant, different cannabinoids and how the endocannabinoid system in the body works.

·      Analyze how cannabis effects the body and interacts with other medications (pharmacology).

·      Interpret the potential role of cannabis in depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mental health conditions through studies.

·      Recognize the public health concerns of cannabis use and understand the impact on special populations.

·      Gain the knowledge and strategies for counseling on the risks and benefits to patients who are interested in cannabis use.

Kelsey Schwander, Pharm.D.

Dr. Kelsey Schwander grew up in Colorado and moved to California to complete her bachelor’s in science in Pharmacology at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Dr. Schwander then completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. After graduation she pursued her Postgraduate Year One Community Practice Residency at University of Colorado where she was an assistant professor, worked in a primary care clinic, helped patients with transitions of care at a hospital and created clinical programs for retail pharmacies. After residency she became the lead Clinical Pharmacist at Good Day Pharmacies, the largest independently owned chain in Colorado. Dr. Schwander has created numerous clinical programs including travel health, naloxone, hormonal contraception, smoking cessation and point of care testing. She was the first pharmacist in the state of Colorado to prescribe a hormonal contraceptive to a patient. Dr. Schwander and her husband relocated to St. Louis where she continued to be a Clinical Specialist remotely for Good Day Pharmacies and at a local pharmacy in St. Louis. In June 2020 she accepted a Clinical Assistant Professor position at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy. She will teach pharmacy students and is a clinical ambulatory care pharmacist in a primacry care clinic. In 2019 she started BHealth Consulting, a healthcare consulting company focused on empowering patients, providers and businesses to create healthcare solutions. As a Doctor of Pharmacy, her main focus is providing specialized medication consulting services for businesses to help increase revenue while keeping the patient the center focus of your practice. She has her Clinical Cannabinoid Medicine Certification and is experienced in discussing cannabis with patients due to her past clinical work in Colorado. Dr. Schwander has been asked to speak about medical cannabis in numerous platforms in Missouri including Truman State University, Gateway Wellness Associates and will be a guest on “Get Real to Heal” radio talk show. She plans to continue educating around the evolving landscape of medical cannabis and prescription medications.
