January 2023 Monthly Meeting (12JAN2023)

Title: "Improving Cybersecurity and Safety in Smart Buildings and Infrastructure"

Presented by: Honorable Lucian Niemeyer, F. SAME

Synopsis:

National cyber threats are rapidly evolving from malware and ransomware attacks affecting data and software to “killware” attacks targeting facilities and infrastructure in all sectors of society. In response, federal engineers have turned to the AEC industry for collaboration and recommendations to enhance the planning, design, and protection of smart technologies in buildings and infrastructure to mitigate threats. Additionally, federal and State agencies are developing policies and guidance for cyber protections in a full range of projects funded through the $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

SAME has established a national Industry-Government Engagement (IGE) on Cyber Security for the AEC industry to collaborate on enhancements to requirements, design specifications, and commissioning instructions for cyber safety.  Lucian will update on the underlying cyber threat to smart technologies, the development of a national performance framework to mitigate cyber risk in the built environment, and the progress of the IGE for your company be postured and ready to offer to cyber protections.
