Presentation Title: Human Factors Issues with Semi-Automated and Automated Vehicles

Some may expect that the development of automated vehicles will lessen the need for human factors. To the contrary! A host of new human factors issues have arisen. With any automated system, the operator’s understanding of how the system works, “the mental model”, is crucial. What is the role of the driver and what is the role of the automated system?  For example, does the lane marking detection system include control or a warning only? What level of situational awareness can be expected of the driver when control is suddenly transferred to a manual system? In other words, how many seconds does it take to wake up? What are the unintended consequences of introducing automation? Do drivers of semi-automated vehicles pay sufficient attention to the road?  Or will drivers engage more intensely in talking on the phone, watching TV or other secondary tasks? How will drivers learn how to operate these new systems? These and other related issues will be discussed, and illustrated with recent human factors studies.
