Guest of Honour Paul ‘Blocker’Wilson
An Australian cricket umpire and former cricketer who played one Test and eleven ODIs for Australia and had a first class career spanning 10 years, whilst representing South Australia and Western Australia. Born in Newcastle and schooled and raised in Lake Macquarie, with the legend ‘Dutchy’ Holland from Southern Lakes DCC as his friend and mentor.
A test batting average which could not be calculated. 13 wickets at 34 in ODIs. 151 wickets at 30 in 51 1st class games with an economy rate of 2.5. List A matches 84 with 114 wickets. If the qualities of determination, tenacity and persistence, as well as a considerable degree of natural ability still count for anything in cricket, then Paul Wilson rightfully enjoyed a fruitful career.
He then went on to umpire and so far has stood in 4 tests and >50 limited over internationals. It’s an interesting statistic-the Number of men who have played Test cricket for Australia: 443. Number of Australians who have umpired a Test: 91. Number who have done both: six. (Charles Bannerman, George Coulthard, George McShane, Arthur Richardson, Paul Reiffel, and Paul Wilson).
Funds raised from this Luncheon will assist The Hawthorne Club’s 2021 Rugby Investment program which supports The Hawthorne Cup, Local Rugby Clubs, Women’s 15’s and 7’s, Referees and Juniors.
