INTRODUCTION TO SANDPLAY THERAPY

WHAT IS SANDPLAY THERAPY?

Sandplay Therapy is a creative and experiential approach to psychotherapy. Utilizing sand, water, and miniature figurines, the client creates spontaneous images using their imagination. These images bring forth unconscious material to consciousness. The Sandplay Therapy process encourages psychological healing thus reducing inner conflicts.

ABSTRACT:

The purpose of the Introductory workshop in Jungian/Kalffian Sandplay is to have participants become familiar with the framework and theory of this method of therapy. The two day, 12 hour training introduces major concepts that the clinician learns in order to begin to feel comfortable using the modality with clients; and, helps the clinician begin to understand the depth of sandplay therapy and how it is useful for clients. The workshop is also designed to help the clinician to better understand the anatomy of the psyche and how, through a sandplay process, the client’s psyche helps the client to become more psychologically integrated.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP:

  • Recognize how the pre-verbal aspect of Sandplay Therapy activates unconscious material in a safe way bringing it to consciousness. Only through the process of regression into the unconscious can progression into a stronger consciousness occur.
  • Explore and understand the anatomy of the psyche and how it is brought to consciousness during a sandplay therapy process
  •  Understand the basic concepts of sandplay therapy and how the therapist is a vital part of the therapeutic process by holding the “free and protected space” of the client so that transference and counter-transference is experienced in a healthy way.
