This two part workshop will define and identify how the racialized systems and culture of oppression in the United States has been internalized by individuals and manifest through our jobs, community and relationships. We will set a foundation of understanding for how systems of oppression are upheld by our actions. Participants will gain understanding of the role systemic devaluing, undermining, marginalizing, and disadvantaging of certain racial identities in contrast to the privileged norm has impacted the self-awareness, self-esteem and collective identity of people of color, while creating a collective identity of superiority, empowerment and access to institutional power expressing itself as unearned privileges and invisible advantages for white people. We will also provide participants with tools and resources to identify these behaviors and uproot the intenalized socialization that are barriers in our relationships.
The second session, offered in early 2018, will provide protected space where participants of color can gain understanding of the acceptance of and acting out of an inferior definition of self and other people of color, along with providing space for multi-racial participants who may experience internalized inferiority differently. White participants will confront the acceptance of and acting out of a superior definition of self and one’s culture, along with understanding of the role of white allies in racial equity. Each group will be provided with information and tools to challenge these definitions and create liberating practices.
