Inside a Spiritual Continent: Islam in Africa

Islam and Christianity are Africa’s largest religious communities and Africa’s most ancient religious communities. This talk explores the history of Islam in Africa and describes its practices and politics of today. Understanding Islam in its African context will help to introduce a major world culture and faith.

Professor Steve Howard has worked in close to a dozen African countries and traveled to many more. He is Professor in the School of Media Arts and Studies on the Athens campus and directed the University’s African Studies Program for 25 years. Howard’s recent book, Modern Muslims (2016) describes life in an Islamic faith community in Sudan. He has more than 20 other published articles on related topics.
