Event Abstract

Heritage is a key element of the Assistant Chief of Air Staff’s remit to deliver internal and external engagement. Working directly with ACAS, the RAF Heritage seeks to identify, preserve, and exploit that Heritage which can be used to inspire current and future generations. The presentation will look at the work of the Team in ensuring the preservation and sharing of the RAF’s history and story-telling, with a particular focus on the retirement of Tornado, but also including station closures, gate guards, artwork, silverware, medals and the recent Operation PANTHER.

The retirement of Tornado after 30 years of distinguished service, prompted vast interest from the media and museums wishing to acquire an example. This, twinned with the aspiration to widen and improve RAF engagement across the country in accordance with the Government’s levelling-up agenda, was the catalyst for the Heritage Team to revisit the policy and regulation surrounding ‘gifting’. To bring this about, they embarked on a programme to expand interaction with regional museums, and pay attention to areas of the UK with limited Defence representation. In many cases, this forced them to take tough decisions on which museums should receive aeroplanes, while turning down others. This was certainly the case with Tornado, where the 63 requests, vastly outnumbered the airframes available.

Retiring an aircraft to a heritage venue is a complex and involved, requiring multi-agency cooperation. From airframe selection working with fleet managers, through Defence Disposals (DESA), Air Command Corporate Governance, Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Squadron (JARTS) and concluding with delivery, assembly and Transfer of Title.

This presentation will interest anyone with a passion for military aviation, history or wider aviation in general.
