Event Abstract
The RAeS Heathrow Branch is delighted to welcome Gianluca Maestri as our Guest Lecturer in January 2023. In his presentation, Gianluca will be sharing the role played by Heathrow’s Masterplanning Team in decarbonising aviation in the UK and worldwide. In this context, delivering the infrastructural plan of the required infrastructures related to the deployment of future fuels.
Since the Heathrow masterplan was last updated in April 2020 several external factors have changed, which may potentially impact future master plans. Principally, a three-step process has been defined to understand the long-term ambition in terms of air decarbonisation, validate the current masterplan and identify future challenges and update the latest version of the masterplan.
The validation phase has been completed to explore the infrastructure requirements for the introduction of hydrogen aircraft, eVTOL, the implication of electric aircraft (rechargeable or swappable batteries), sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) management on-airport and the impact of different fuel operations in the same apron.
Following the validation plan, Heathrow investigated the impact of the different technologies (SAF, electric and liquid hydrogen) in the masterplan. Considering the implication on future operations, the Airport embarked on a critical path to identify the requirements of space, resources, services and infrastructures in the different phases of deployment of future fuels.
In particular, Heathrow 2.0 strategy and project Napkin defined the baseline scenarios of one of the most ambitious decarbonisation plans across the airport industry and represented.
