Overview

In March 2007, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the Government of France signed an agreement to create a universal museum making use of the most innovative techniques of museography, exhibiting items of major importance. Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel, was commissioned to design the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi. The design features a 180 m wide, 24 m high dome composed of a steel structure with a double layer of cladding material with perforated openings of varying sizes and shapes. The project was constructed immediately adjacent the sea, with the depth of excavation up to 11m below sea level.
