ICE Oman Learned Event

Sustainable Wastewater Treatment Systems

By Alexandros Stefanakis, M.Sc., Ph.D

Wetland Specialist - Constructed Wetlands Competence Centre, Bauer Nimr LLC

Muscat

Tuesday, 7th November 2017

6:30 PM to 8:00 PM

Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS)

Overview

“The presentation concerns the topic of sustainable wastewater treatment technologies with special focus on Oman. The status of wastewater treatment in Oman will be discussed along with the potential for alternative sustainable technologies and for treated water reuse. An introduction to Natural Treatment Systems for wastewater treatment will also be presented, their main characteristics and classification, with special focus on the green technology of Constructed Wetlands.

The different types of this technology and the economic, environmental and social advantages will be explained in relation to conventional/mechanical treatment options. The applicability and feasibility of such systems in Oman and Middle East will also be discussed.”

Key points:-

-Sustainability is a significant parameter in wastewater management-

-Water reuse options is crucial practice in Oman, which should be widely applied.

-Natural Treatment Systems are an alternative, green option for wastewater treatment.

-Constructed Wetlands provide effective solution for domestic, municipal, industrial wastewater

-Optimum solution for decentralized wastewater management, i.e., at small/medium, remote, mountainous, isolated settlements

-Constructed Wetlands provide significant environmental benefits

-Operational costs can be up to 90% reduced compared to mechanical systems

About the Speaker

Dr Stefanakis graduated from Democritus University of Thrace, Greece with the Diploma of Environmental Engineer (2005). His thesis focused on advanced wastewater treatment methods, such as Ultrafiltration Membranes and Activated Carbon Filters. His Master in Science (2007) and his Ph.D. (2011) focused on Ecological Engineering and Technology, where he investigated several pilot Constructed Wetland units for sustainable wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering.

His expertise lies in water engineering and specifically on natural systems for the sustainable and decentralized wastewater treatment, mainly Constructed Wetlands. He has is still working as a professional engineer, academic lecturer and researcher. He is known in the related international field as an enthusiast of the green technology of Constructed Wetlands and is always trying to promote this technology and disseminate and transfer his knowledge to fellow colleagues and young engineers and students.

The lecture will start promptly at 6.30pm

Please note that the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a charity and non-profit organisation. We are required to cover costs in order to host ICE Learned Events, this includes the cost of catering.

We have a capacity for registration.

Non-attendance at Leaned events by those who have pre-registered has a severe impact upon other members and upon our ability to host future events.

If you need to make any changes to your registration information or if you are unable to attend please email us on middle.east@ice.org.uk so that we can give your place to another engineer.

If you would like to speak at a future ICE Learned event or have topic suggestions, please contact:  Martyn Harris: martynphh@yahoo.co.uk  or Barry White:  white.renardet@gmail.com

CPD: This event may be considered for contributing to a recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme as part of personal development. Delegates should check their individual scheme requirements.

Once again, thank you to our supporting organisation Oman Society of Engineers.
