Assessment and Rehabilitation of Existing Structures

Overview

The aim of the lecture is to present and discuss the most viable, from both the technical and financial viewpoints, as well as the up-to-date rehabilitation techniques available today to improve the service life of existing structures while preventing catastrophic collapses and consequent loss of human lives.

The main topic is broken down into sub - categories in order to better organize and comprehend the overall assessment and rehabilitation processes that have to be implemented to determine the actual structural capacity of an existing structure and to estimate its remaining service life under the most critical load scenarios. The presentation ends with the discussion of a study case related to the analysis of an existing historical riveted iron bridge. The first part of the study focuses on the evaluation of the actual structural capacity of the bridge, which is currently opened to the local traffic, while the second one presents retrofitting measures that could be adopted to strengthen it and increase its structural performance under moving loads and seismic actions.

About the Speaker:

Clemente Caruso is a Civil Structural Engineer who currently works as Bridge Designer at Renardet S.A. & Partners, in The Sultanate of Oman.

He has 7 years of experience in the Field of Structural Analysis and Design of Roadway Bridges (Wadi Bridges and Flyovers), Hydraulic-related structures (reservoirs, pumping stations and culverts) and Underpasses (Cut-and-Cover Solutions). He has particular interest in Fracture Mechanics, Seismic Retrofitting of Existing Structures and Wind-Induced Vibrations. He has participated, as speaker, at the European Conference on Multiphysics Modeling and the 7th International Conference on Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure
