Helping Children Figure It Out: Growing Young Minds at School

How do schools meet the challenges of testing expectations, reduced time and resources and increased 21st century stressors facing young children, parents, and educators today? How do teachers foster independence, learn when to intervene and when to allow space for children to figure things out? How do teachers consider the child’s inner life?
In this event teachers of young children, and a school counselor, all with many years of experience, offer their observations with case examples and ideas of how to facilitate children's learning by planning emergent learning projects that integrate literacy, science, social studies and math with a deeper understanding of who the child is intellectually, emotionally and socially. The goal is to create an environment and educational experience that fosters a child’s sense of self.
Vanessa Cid, MEd. has been an early childhood educator in the Boston area for over thirteen years. She received her master’s degree in Elementary Education from UMass Boston through the Boston Teacher Residency Program. She received a CAGS certificate in child and adolescent intervention through the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis to enhance her knowledge of how conscious and unconscious influences on human development, motivation, and interpersonal interactions affect a child’s intellectual and emotional learning.
Bethania (Tanya) Paris, MA is a teacher in the Brookline public schools. Her teaching career spans two decades, in grades K through 5 and she started as a bilingual teacher in Chelsea, MA. She has a master’s degree in special education, is a poet and a novelist and is the author of over twenty picture books for students in PreK-5th grade, many dealing with emotional and cultural issues. Ms. Paris is a native of the Dominican Republic and the co-founder of Las Margaritas Foundation, a non-profit organization working to educate underserved children in the Dominican Republic.
Discussant: Jane Snyder, PhD, Cert Psya is a training and supervising psychoanalyst and President of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, where she has worked with students for over thirty years. She has a special interest in child development, and has published several articles on the development of the mind.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify stressors that affect teachers, parents and young children today, and highlight how these stressors might influence a child.
- Discuss how to foster a child’s independence and give examples that you can apply to your work.
- Discuss ways to facilitate a child’s learning which takes into account intellectual, emotional and social factors.
