Children ages 6-10 may participate in Beginner Opti, an afternoon program designed for kids that emphasizes sailing concepts, teamwork, and skills development while offering off-water activities to keep everyone having fun and learning about life on the lake and the ecosystem of Otsego County. Participate in one week or more - students who spend more weeks in the program will most effectively build their sailing knowledge, skills, and experience translating learning into action.

Children ages 8-12 with any previous sailing experience may participate in Single Handing Opti, a course which is designed to offer more on-water time to advance student skill levels toward indepedent small boat sailing. Students must be able to sail out of the harbor and make appropriate basic sailing decisions independent of instructor directions.

Children ages 11-18 may participate in Junior Laser or Junior Racing offerings, both great opportunities for children to learn and practice small boat sailing skills.  Junior Laser offers students who are comfortable sailing on their own the ability to continue advancing their skills. Junior Racing allows experienced junior sailors to learn the rules of racing and hone their sailing skills in a low pressure environment. Older students should still be attending high school to participate in the Junior programs.

Adults ages 18 and up may participate in Adult Flying Scot program, which is a course designed to provide active learning of the skills and knowledge needed to be a sailboat owner and pursue the lifelong enjoyment of sailing. It's a great opportunity to try sailing for the first time and for those looking to jump on board again and refresh previous experience. The course is taught on Flying Scot class boats made possible in part through the support of the Flying Scot Foundation.

All students must have a life jacket with attached whistle, sneakers, clothes they are comfortable getting wet in, and a change of clothes. Water-resistant sunscreen is recommended.

Minor students need to be picked up promptly following classes as adult supervision may not always be available following class.

Otsego Sailing Club

treasurer@otsegosailingclub.com

The Otsego Sailing Club, Inc., is a non-profit organization of sailboat owners who have mutual interests in sailing and sailboat racing. It was founded to encourage recreation and competitive sailing, to promote safety in sailing and all associated activities, and to promote good sportsmanship. The club traces its roots to the summer of 1961 when five families sailed together on Otsego Lake. That fall they organized the Otsego Sailing Club. By-laws were written and race and social programs organized. The support that the club received from Harry Cook was one of the key factors that assured its future. For several years he permitted the club to rent part of his land. He then sold to the club the property it now owns. We have prospered over the years because of the good will and cooperative spirit of our members. Membership includes obligations and responsibilities in order to ensure the continuance of the club.
