FUTURE AIRSPACE STRATEGY (FAS): SET TO MODERNISE UK AIRSPACE

STUART LINDSEY

MANAGER AIRSPACE REGULATION, CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY UK

PROGRAMME INTRO

The basic structure of the UK’s airspace was developed over forty years ago. Since then there have been huge changes, including a hundred-fold increase in demand for aviation and the adoption of the latest technologies by the industry. In Europe, there had been a significant move to simplify and harmonise the way airspace and air traffic control by 2020 through the Single European Sky project. As the UK and Ireland were getting ready to address these challenges through the Future Airspace Strategy (FAS), Brexit has completely changed the roadmap.

The RAeS Heathrow Branch October lecture will provide an overview of the Future Airspace Strategy (FAS), and describe how the UK aviation sector is planning to respond to the many challenges posed by Brexit, specific government policies and important environmental issues.

Achieving sustainable growth in UK aviation is dependent on improving the way air traffic is managed and moves around the airspace. Mr Lindsey will speak about the new capabilities and technologies that are enabling an unrelenting airspace modernisation. He will describe how globally, aircraft navigation is shifting from current conventional navigation means, which uses ground-based navigation facilities, to a more precise airborne-based navigation system that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS), and how these new capabilities are requiring the development of new standards suitable to a modern Airspace.

NOTE FOR REGISTRATION

Thanks for registering your attendance via our Eventzilla site.

We have streamlined our event registration process by introducing online booking platform as an alternative to email and telephone registeration for our lectures/events, as well as developing a way of tracking numbers on any lectures/events that may be oversubscribed.

When you book, please select the relevant ticket option, and the number of tickets you would like. The tickets will be automatically emailed to you, as there is currently no option for us to produce a ticket at the door.

The application asks for both registration and attendee details - even if there is only one person on the booking, you must fill in all fields. If you are reserving more than one ticket please ensure you enter the name of all attendees so they are reflected on the attendee list.

If there is any problem incurred during the registration process, or if there's anything we can improve on this tool, please contact the Branch Secretary –
