This full-day workshop is made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. The workshop was created as a result of an IMLS-funded study on identifying practical digital preservation solutions for small- and mid-sized libraries. We will not be addressing the “why” of digital preservation; rather, we are preparing for the “how.”...providing hands-on, practical experience. Attendees will practice the accession of a digital collection using a simple, open source tool; learn about several digital preservation tools and services; and create an institution-specific action plan for making progress towards digital preservation goals. Target Audience

This is a hands-on workshop designed specifically for front-line practitioners from small and mid-sized institutions, who routinely complete collections processing work. If you understand the need for digital preservation, and are now seeking to build daily workflows that incorporate accessioning digital materials, processing them, and planning for their long-term preservation, you are our target audience. The focus on the workshop is on preservation and not on access (digitization) of materials. An introductory knowledge of digital preservation issues, such as those outlined in the Library of Congress's Digital Preservation Outreach & Education Curriculum, is required.

 

**Please note that this is not a workshop on digitization. However, the curriculum could be helpful to implement a digital preservation plan into a digitization project. The skills taught can be applied to both born-digital as well as digitized collections.**

 

Workshop Expected Outcomes

-You will understand that different digital preservation tools/services can perform different functions within the digital curation lifecycle and be able to explain how these tools/services can be used within your institution’s workflow.

-You will practice some of the initial pre-ingest activities* required to accession a digital collection and gain the skills necessary to repeat this process at your institution.

-You will gain hands on experience with a basic digital preservation tool and understand how it can be used within your institution’s workflow.

-You will take away resources that help align communication and advocacy, as well as guide policymaking and tool selection/implementation.

-You will create a 3-3-3 Action Plan to implement in the following 3 months that will move you closer to your digital preservation goals.
