Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD’s) and Brain Based Conditions:
Understanding a Brain Based Approach
FASD’s are the leading cause of developmental disabilities in the Western World yet the least recognized and understood. FASD’s are neurobehavioral conditions seen across our communities, and individuals affected often do not respond to traditional techniques. The result is frequently anger, frustration and bouncing between service providers, court systems, and social service systems.
This informational session provides education about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders/Neurobehavioral Conditions (FA/NB) and the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the brains and behaviors of children and adults. In this session you will be able to:
- Identify and understand FASD’s as Brain Based Conditions
- Understand why traditional behavioral treatment techniques and systems are frequently ineffective for people with FA/NB
- Understand and recognize primary and secondary symptoms.
- Identify beginning strategies to reduce stress and frustration and increase successes.
About the Speaker
Melissa Elligson, MA
Melissa Elligson is a Certified Facilitator of the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model and a FASCETS Program Director. She is also a community-based counselor with Intercept Health. She holds a master’s degree from Seton Hall University and has spent the past twenty years as an advocate, community counselor, and trainer.
Her passion is working with children and families living with neurobehavioral conditions and providing training nationally. She became frustrated that traditional models were not working within the community, and this brought her to Diane Malbin and her journey with FASCETS. Melissa is currently providing training, consultation, and family groups. She is working on developing a community-based diagnostic clinic in Southwest Virginia.
