Description:
Kathleen Rea returns to the stage in this new COVID world to perform Five Angels on the Steps, a solo dance work created by choreographer Newton Moraes. Newton Moraes is a Toronto-based Brazilian choreographer who lives to transform moments that mark life, positive or negative, into dance. Moraes dove into this process, exploring the inner workings of Rea's life experiences as they rehearsed together. He then wove these into an imagistic tapestry of human expression. His creation is a testament to Rea, who as a mature dancer, brings a depth of presence and experience to the stage.

The title, Five Angels on the Steps derives from Rea's near-death experiences in which she floated out of her body and met five angels in the canopy of a forest grove. What she learned from them is one of the main drivers of this dance work. They are forever present in the work, represented by five large yellow and red octagonal cylinders. Inevitably, Rea’s unique perspective from living with Autism also permeates the work. Along for the ride is “Skelly”, Rea's anatomical skeleton that she uses to teach functional movement classes in her work life. The themes explored are death, madness, visions, being neuroatypical, functional movement and anatomy, sensuality, little monsters, love and loss. Be prepared for an intense ride!

Length
Five Angels on the Steps is 55 minutes in length.

Content Warning: It is only suitable for a mature audience (16 plus) due to nudity, and sexual and mature themes that are explored.

REAson d'etre dance productions

http://www.reasondetre.com/

REAson d'etre dance productions strives to provide artistic expression through movement, inclusive of age, ability, level background. We stage and program works based on Contact Improvisation so we can utilize the inclusiveness that can be a part of this dance form. Our vision is for both professional dancers and everyday people to be inspired and invigorated by Contact Improvisation. This mandate involves initiatives that work to dismantle racism and ablism and other "isms" as their existence hinders us in achieving our mandate. We are committed to examining the art form of contact improvisation and acknowledging its history of inequity, ableism, and racism. We commit to engage in a continuing process of educating ourselves and acting for change. We believe that increasing accessibility breaks down barriers to dance, creating a stunning humanity that is the heart of the artistic aesthetic we reach for. Our contact dance jams are the root from which all our programming grows. Our jams are a mix of performance, research, rehearsal, and incubator. A musician improvises, sweeping dancers into explorations of different themes. Teaming Contact Dance with exceptional live music deepens the form. People alternate between dancing and watching the performance. The jams build community. It's about relationships, with the quality of communication being the aesthetic measure. Classes in functional movement help Contact Dancers move with ease and prevent injury. We see healthy
