PROGRAM Grades K-5, 9:45 am - 12 noon *Colonial Life Program Life was different for people in colonial South Carolina that it is today, but in some ways it was very much the same. Students will compare and contrast life then and now by looking at pictures and examining reproduction artifacts. They will have a chance to play 18th century games and make an authentic 18th century headache sack. *Indigo Dyeing Students will investigate the historical importance of indigo and understand why this plant became a valuable cash crop in South Carolina during the 1700’s as they learn about the challenges and successes of indigo cultivation. Students will have the opportunity to create an indigo-dyed t-shirt as they explore process of making indigo dye. PREPARATION Students need to dress for outdoor environmental education: Sturdy shoes (sneakers, rubber boots), hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, rain jacket, etc. Please check the weather. ? MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL GROUP:

Grades 6-12, 9:45 am - 12:15 pm

1/2 - Medicine in Colonial Times What was health care like for people in colonial South Carolina? Students will learn how people in the past dealt with sickness and disease through a presentation (lead by a costumed presenter) and by examining reproduction artifacts. They will then analyze the treatment given to George Washington during his final illness.

2/2 - Indigo Dyeing Students will investigate the historical importance of indigo and understand why this plant became a valuable cash crop in South Carolina during the 1700’s as they learn about the challenges and successes of indigo cultivation. Students will have the opportunity to create an indigo-dyed t-shirt as they explore process of making indigo dye. **Students need to bring a white tshirt

 

ALL STUDENTS

*Dress for outdoor environmental education: Sturdy shoes (sneakers, rubber boots), hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, rain jacket, etc. Please check the weather.

*Lunch: Students need to provide a bagged lunch on the day of their field trip. Keeping the environment in mind, we suggest that food be packed in re-usable containers. Please keep a close eye on your students and your watch during lunch so you can have your students cleaned up (all trash into the trash can and nothing left on the ground please)
