This meeting is open to NASW-NJ members who are private practitioners, though most in this group work in Essex County. The Essex PPSIG meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10AM - 11AM. November Meeting: IN-PERSON NETWORKING EVENT!

Back by popular demand! Everyone loved last month's meetup so much that we decided to come together in-person again before it gets too cold!
We will meet for a networking, meet and greet, in-person (COVID protocols followed) event on Friday, November 12. We will meet outside from 10-11a at the Waterfront at South Mountain Recreation Center (560 Northfield Ave, West Orange, NJ 07052). Parking can be found across the street on Cherry Lane (exact Google Maps location is here).
There are covered picnic tables in front of the water, restrooms nearby, and free parking across the street. We'll have coffee and light refreshments. Don't forget to bring business cards, or plan to share info electronically.
This date will replace our regular second Thursday of the month meeting for November.

Clay Cockrell, LCSW is a therapist based in New York City and is the founder of several counseling oriented endeavors. He will be presenting on the ins and outs of virtual therapy. Covering topics: Logistics – equipment, set up, technical aspects; Clinical approach – connecting through a screen; Marketing and Practice building; HIPAA / state licensure; International opportunities.
Most recently Clay Cockrell is the founder of Onlinecounseling.com – a listing directory with the mission of helping clients all over the world to find the therapist that will best meet their needs. The site also works through their educational resources and podcasts to help counselors work online in an ethical, responsible and legal manner. He is currently the host of two podcasts: The Online Counseling podcast and Finding Therapy.

Marissa Pick on The Importance of Personal Branding & Social Media Channels within the Era of COVID-19.
Personal branding is the process of how we market ourselves to others. Marketing guru Tom Peters first coined the phrase in a Fast Company article in 1997: “Big companies understand the importance of brands. Today, in the age of the individual, you have to be your own brand… We are all CEOs of our own companies: Me, Inc.” Join New Jersey-based digital marketing strategist Marissa Pick for a webinar that will cover what constitutes a personal brand and why leveraging LinkedIn has proven to be the key platform for personal branding. Attendees will learn about the do’s and don’ts of managing social media channels, personal appearance and communication skills in the pursuit of building a brand for the most important asset we have, ourselves.

Ethics in the Age of COVID

David C. Barry, J.D., M.S.W., L.S.W. is a New Jersey licensed attorney, mediator, and licensed social worker. Mr. Barry’s Juris Doctorate was obtained at the Georgetown University Law Center. His M.S.W. degree was obtained at Rutgers.Mr. Barry is a recent past President of NASW-New Jersey, and the past Chair of NASW’s National Ethics Committee. He served on the National Working Group that drafted the recently adopted technology revisions to NASW’s Code of Ethics.
Mr. Barry’s legal practice includes advising and representing social workers and other mental health professionals regarding a broad range of legal, ethical, and practice-related issues, including representing them before their licensing boards. Mr. Barry’s law partner and wife Laura Bowne Barry brings her expertise in business formation and business-related issues to the service of the Firm’s mental health clients.

Let's Talk About Race, Racism, and Anti-Racism from A Social Justice Work Perspective
Presented by Dr. Tawada Hubbard, MSW, DSW, LCSW
Dr. Tawanda Hubbard is a social work educator and practitioner. She teaches at her alma mater, Rutgers SSW as a part-time lecturer and former faculty at Monmouth University SSW. She was honored as RUSSW Outstanding Doctoral Student Instructor in 2016. Dr. Hubbard is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience in child welfare, behavioral health, adolescent and family therapy, and clinical practice. Dr. Hubbard is a clinical supervisor, consultant, and trainer with NJ Victims Assistance Academy and NJ Child Welfare Partnership. She conducts webinars, workshops and presentations based on her scholarship interests (anti-racism, oppositionality in adolescence, relational neglect in adolescents, social justice in clinical practice, etc.). She serves on Rutgers School of Social Work Alumni Advisory Council and CSWE Minority Fellowship Doctoral Advisory Council. Dr. Hubbard is the immediate past president of NASW-NJ Chapter and CSWE Minority Fellowship Doctoral Alumna.
April Meeting: The Impact of Recreational Marijuana on Clinical Practice
Presentation by Katherine Coleman, LPC, LCADC, CCS, ICCS, ACS
With the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state of New Jersey, it is important as clinicians to begin to discuss the potential impacts that this will have on the field of mental health and substance use treatment. This training will evaluate how this transition will impact different facets of treatment engagement such as how we diagnosis, how we discuss marijuana usage, what are risk factors, and how we can mitigate the potential negative effects. This discussion will also evaluate cultural and community changes which may be influenced due to this law.
