This two-day workshop will explore what inhibits ELLs’ success in many school districts nationally and why attempts to “fix” ELLs aren’t working. Additionally, participants will reflect on their relationships with, and perceptions of, students and families who are English Language Learners and immigrants. We will also:

  • Examine linguicism and implicit bias to consider the impact on ELL achievement
  • Engage in equity conversations relating to language, immigration, and ELLs to build capacity to address the obstacles of ELL achievement
  • Evaluate the current English language development model in order to identify practices to stop, start, and keep
  • Build a repertoire of school and classroom strategies to support ELLs and their families

 

We will provide a continental breakfast. Lunch will be on your own. Please note that our building is a historic building and requires that attendees are able to climb stairs to the second floor. The sessions will run from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day.

We have a small number of free parking spots in our parking lot, but we encourage you to carpool or take public transportation (the T line of the Muni stops at 3rd Street and 20th Street, two blocks from our office).
