The objective of the project is to collect and convey groundwater and storm water runoff from the Dubai World Central area (about 135 km2) and adjacent communities (about 245 km2) which will be discharged into the Gulf.
The project consists of a 10km tunnel of 11.05m TBM boring diameter, at approx. 45m below ground.
This ground-breaking tunnel will tackle both rainwater and groundwater, and will drain almost 40% of the entire urban area of Dubai including the flagship project Dubai South, with Al Maktoum International Airport, the Expo 2020 site and several other emerging developments.
Dr Jaya will elaborate on the new vision of drainage master planning in Dubai, to cope with increasing urbanisation and rising ground water and in meeting rainwater infrastructure needed to serve Dubai's growing residential and business communities.
Christoph and Francois will take us through the tunnelling technics used on the project and the associated civil works including the construction of four deep drop shafts (20m dia., up to 45m deep).
