This workshop will present the basic concepts of geographic information systems (GIS).  Topics to be covered include components of GIS, spatial databases, data acquisition, reference frameworks, spatial analysis and mapping design. The workshop will highlight the increasing importance of geographic information applications in planning and in social science.  The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to ESRI ArcGIS desktop tool and provide a number of basic and practical GIS skills.  It is a hands-on seminar, which will require students to use the GIS software from the first step as well as go through online exercises.
