Edward Babiarz creates handmade paper sculptures that are influenced by abstract, contemporary forms. "I think that art is a voice. A voice that comes from the power that possibly moves people to think, act or react to it. The simplicity and movement of paper draws me to this medium. My creative process is my personal, individual experience and like my pieces, each conveys different emotions ranging from subtle, quiet moods to strong bold thoughts. The colors ore brought together by arranging sometimes harmonious and sometimes clashing but cooperative polarity. Themes of my work run from personifying inanimate physical objects to constructing more abstract non-representational images. I create to please myself, to explore the release of thought and emotion."
"I find that by manipulating individual handmade sheets of paper, I can create images that are texturally complex and by custom blending pigmented pulp, unique color and effects take shape." The paper for my pieces is created with l00%, first cut cotton linter that I individually hand dye with aqueous dispersed pigments that are exceptionally light fast, yield intense hues, and are formulated specifically for the coloring of paper pulp . The linter, or pulp, is then formed with my papermaker's mold and deckle. Each sheet of paper is separately shaped and sculpted. Once the paper dries, it is sealed with an archival glue to maintain its form and to ensure protection. After this application dries, luster pigments are often added to emphasize various elements of the piece.
Mr. Babiarz received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College, Scranton, PA and has taken advanced courses in papermaking. An award-winning artist from Sinking Spring, PA, Mr. Babiarz 's work is in galleries and in private collections throughout the United States and Canada. His work has been recognized by the International Association of Hand Papermaker’s.
Each creation represents another avenue of communicating the beauty and diversity of handmade paper.
