The Art & Etiquette of Communicating and Receiving Data Visualization Feedback

Feedback is crucial to continuous growth and improvement, but it is deceptively hard to both give and receive, especially in data viz. The success of feedback depends both on the method of the feedback and the recipient. We'll go over lessons learned from the Feedback Loop, VizOfficeHours, the IronViz feedback initiative, and MakeoverMonday on how to give constructive, helpful feedback that can help a person grow. We will also touch on how to avoid harmful feedback that can both hinder the recipient's progress and create a space where people become afraid to ask for feedback. Lastly we will talk about how to be a good recipient of feedback and some thoughts on what you should with feedback and how to handle feedback that is either unsolicited or does not work for your vision.

About the speakers

Michelle Frayman 

Michelle started using Tableau Public at the end of 2018 to participate in #MakeoverMonday. When she is not practicing with #MakeoverMonday, #IronQuest, or #ProjectHealthViz she likes to viz about topics in her everyday life and engage with the data community on Twitter at @maf2k. She co-leads #VizOfficeHours, #TheFeedbackLoop and #DataFamCon and has occasionally tried to broaden her horizons attempting to blog at My Data Continuum. Her favorite part of Tableau Public is that it is available to anyone to use. Her kids have even set up accounts to build vizzes for their Bar Mitzvah projects and she hopes they move past their love of pie charts. When not vizzing she enjoys spending time with her family cooking, skiing, camping, and playing ultimate Frisbee.

Nicole Klassen

Nicole is a data visualization developer with a passion for social science research and mental health advocacy. She combines her background in psychological research with her data viz skills to create vizzes that shine a light on societal problems such as mental health, climate change, and women's rights. Her work in the community both vizzing and co-leading the Atlanta Tableau User Group, #DataFamCon and #Eduvizzers has earned her a Vizzie and 3 Viz of the Days.
