Up in Smoke: Co-ops, Marijuana, and Non-Smoking Policies

Is smoking a concern at your co-op? Are you worried about what happens when Marijuana is legalized in 2019? We’ll discuss the health and financial reasons for reducing smoking in your housing co-op. Join our experts as we tackle questions such as:

  • What are the health effects of second-hand smoke?
  • How can a co-op develop a policy to reduce or eliminate smoking?
  • What are the best practices for implementing a fair, effective and enforceable policy?
  • How should your co-op tackle recreational and medicinal marijuana use?

The environment in which housing co-operatives operate is rapidly changing. Our homes need significant repairs, operating agreements and subsidies are ending, many members are aging in place and energy costs and our carbon footprint are significant challenges.

(in English, for HSA Co-ops)

Is your co-op legislated under the Housing Services Act and funded through your local municipality?

Do you wonder what will happen at your co-op when the mortgage is paid off? In this workshop, we will discuss the things that will change and the things that will stay the same at the end of mortgage. We will review the current funding model and the effects when the mortgage is paid off.

Vacancy Loss: The Annual Co-op $3.5M giveaway!

(in English)

Each year, co-ops in Ontario give away the equivalent of 35 luxury sports cars by not keeping their units full. Come along and hear from experts on how to reduce vacancy loss; money you could use to turn your co-op homes into dream homes. You can’t afford to take a break from this important responsibility. Get the skills needed to fill your units and take lavish vacations from the revolving door of vacancy loss. Act now! Don’t delay! Avoid disappointment! Sign up for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Meaningful Member Engagement

(in English)

Are we asking too much of our members? We know that our outdated model of mandated participation is more of a problem than a solution. How can members really make a difference and strike a balance between the things that matter most—planning for a strong future and building a co-op community? Join us and we’ll discuss a different way members can be involved in housing co-ops and suggest some new strategies that you can use in your co-op.

Global Panorama of Co-operative Housing

(in English)

Presented by Julie LaPalme, Program Director, Co-operative Housing International (CHI)

Housing co-operatives are part of a community-led movement that is gaining momentum around the globe. They are providing housing solutions that meet the community and economic goals of people in a sustainable and democratic way. Co-operatives around the world take many forms and sizes: rental, ownership and co-ownership and from 10 to 10,000 member co-operatives. As Program Director for CHI, Julie has visited housing co-operatives in Uruguay, Chile, France, Germany, Switzerland, the UK and in the US. Her presentation will illustrate how the co-operative principles are making an impact internationally. Join us for a trip around the world!
