CAN WE WORK WITH INDUSTRY?

Getting to know industry tactics

Before taking up a senior lectureship in sociology and public policy at Aston University Gary was part of an inter-university research group (with colleagues based in the Universities of Bath, Edinburgh, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) which played a leading role internationally in exploring the impact of transnational tobacco companies on health policy both at the national and transnational level.

Gary will discuss how to identify and understand industry tactics which can be used to undermine health promotion initiatives. Did you know that Coca Cola partnered with the Bicycle Network Australia to provide free bikes to young people? Or McDonalds sponsors Little Athletics? The presentation will increase awareness of how food, tobacco and alcohol industries employ “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR) tactics in manipulating perceptions around health outcomes. Gary will also address some positive examples of CSR.
