Description and Outline:

1. Contemporary communications system design includes various technologies not part of a traditional AV discussion. Our AV Transport Methods Master Class will begin with an exploration of emerging and relevant trends important to the AV professional.  In the first part of our day we will look at the meaning of convergence, the four vectors of successful system design, advances in display performance, and the critical importance of content consideration in system design.  Part 1 of the workshop will also include an close look at UHD, HDR, the AV quality triangle, and the new ANSI/AVIXA DISCAS standard.

2. HDMI is the most ubiquitous AV connection on Earth.  That said, how many of us understand the underlying TMDS and 8b/10b implementations that distinguish this connection from the similar looking DisplayPort system?  How and when can we adapt one signal type to another?  Where does HDCP come into the equation, and how does HDCP 2.2 impact commercial AV design? Legrand’s AV Transport Methods Master Class will address these questions and more in part 2 of our 5-part course.

3. Universal Serial Bus is a core technology of effective unified communications and collaborations systems. New power delivery and connectivity standards demand a comprehensive understanding of USB theory and application.   We will take an exhaustive look at USB 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1 standards, including power delivery and alternate-mode functions in part 3 of the workshop.

4. Power management and thermal management are two sides of the same coin.  The industry is quickly moving towards deployment of DC power.  Still, most devices require connection to an AC mains technical power supply.  Any device that has a power supply will also be a source of heat.  Power and thermal management become complicated when we are installing devices in technical furniture and compact wall or ceiling boxes.  A focused look at both power and thermal management will be part 4 of the workshop.

5. HDBaseT has had a profound impact on the AV community.  Introduced in 2010, this technology empowers plug-and-play connectivity between HD video sources and remote displays.  HDBaseT features PoH power delivery; how does that compare to PoE  delivery? How does HDBaseT compare to AV-over-IP?  What are the real differences and when should each be deployed?  We will explore the answers to these questions in part 5 of Legrand’s AV Transport Methods Master Class.

Target Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will understand how three axis of content measurement affect the overall digital AV signal payload, allowing for a deeper understanding of bandwidth needs and trade-offs

2. Participants will be able to properly identify challenges in converting digital AV signals between various the transport methods and select those most appropriate to a successful solution

3. Participants will be able to select from various structured carriage solutions to meet design challenges, including selecting from AV-over-IP and home-span point-to-point technology
