Creativity Within Constraints | Dr. Kevin Gumienny

Too often, the focus of elearning design is on the latest exciting, innovative, and flashy animation or activity. Using ever more complex interactions is often justified by the need to maintain learner engagement in a fast-paced training environment.

But there are costs to this approach. Exciting doesn’t equal effective. Innovative interactions take time to develop, time that could be spent on the next project. And, too often, elearning that is flashy is elearning that many learners—especially those who may have disabilities—have difficulty perceiving; and if learners can’t access the content, they can’t learn from it.

In this session, we’ll
  • explore elearning interactions that will grab learners and hold their attention
  • introduce theory and research that shows how learners learn
  • discuss the benefits of using templates and pattern libraries to design accessible interactions
  • explore the idea of finding creativity within template constraints to develop effective elearning
