Description: This webinar is part of our Race, Responsibilities and Reconciliation Series

Please join Dr. Anne Deepak and Dr. Tawanda Hubbard for a presentation and conversation on anti-racism in social work as a path towards building authentic relationships and creating institutional change.

Anti-racism practice in social work requires an examination of the impact of structural racism and an action plan for addressing it in our own lives, the agencies and communities we live and work in, and the individuals, families, organizations and communities we work with. Anti-racism practice enables us to build authentic relationships across racial differences and address the power imbalances between Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and White people for the purpose of creating institutional change. In this workshop we will examine:  What is racism, what is anti-racism and how you can be an ally working towards racial equity

Learning Objectives:

After this workshop you will:

  1. Have a better understanding of racism and anti-racism
  2. Have language and vocabulary around anti-racism
  3. Learn how to build authentic relationships through understanding anti-racism practice
  4. Learn how to work toward racial equity by being an ally

Anne C. Deepak, PhD
Associate Professor, Monmouth University

Dr. Anne Deepak is an Associate Professor at Monmouth University School of Social Work and coordinates the Global and Community Practice (GCP) Masters concentration. She also serves as a representative on the team of the International Federation of Social Workers to the United Nations. As a practitioner, she worked with formerly homeless families and people living with HIV/AIDS. She has served two terms on the Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education and worked with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General Prosecutors and Supervision & Training Bureau on a required cultural diversity and de-escalation training for all NJ police officers. Her scholarship, research and teaching have been in the area of social justice, diversity and anti-racism within social work education. Her other scholarly work has been focused on the development and application of postcolonial feminist social work perspective to social problems to issues such as food security, human trafficking, humanitarian initiatives for women’s economic empowerment, and social work practice with refugees and immigrants.

Tawanda Hubbard, DSW, LCSW
Social work educator and practitioner

Dr. Tawanda Hubbard is a social work educator and practitioner. She is a licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience in child welfare, behavioral health, adolescent and family therapy, case management, and clinical practice. She has a postmasters in Clinical Practice with Adolescents from NYU; and trained in Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Bowen Family Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing and Family Therapy at Ackerman and Multicultural Family Institutes. Dr. Hubbard received the honor of Outstanding Doctoral Instructor at Rutgers School of Social Work in 2016 and recipient of CSWE Minority Doctoral Fellowship for 2016-2017 academic school year. Dr. Hubbard currently provides family and individual therapy as a private practitioner and trains DCP&P Workers (children protection) as part of New Jersey Child Welfare Training Partnership. Dr. Hubbard is the immediate past President of the National Association of Social Workers, New Jersey Chapter.
