Workshop Leader: Niamh Roche
Venue: Dalgan Park, Navan, Co. Meath C15AY2Y
Date: Saturday, 23rd May
Time: 17:00 - 23:00 (fieldwork included)
Audience: Beginner recorders to intermediate recorders

Workshop description:

This workshop, which is aimed at beginner and intermediate recorders, will introduce participants to Irish bat species, their life cycle and biology. We will identify preserved specimens in the hand by examining morphological features using the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s Identification Guide to Ireland’s Bats. In addition, we will listen to recordings of bats from tuneable bat detectors to train our ears to identify bats in flight. The indoor sessions will be followed by a walk outdoors after dusk in the grounds of Dalgan Park to practise using tuneable detectors. Those who own their own bat detectors should bring them to the workshop. This workshop will not include sonogram analysis or the use of bat sound classification software.

Health & Safety:
Please be mindful that this workshop includes an element of teaching outdoors and will include up to two hours fieldwork at and after dusk. Warm waterproof clothing and footwear are essential. Please bring a Hi-Vis gilet to this workshop if you own one. As a rule of thumb, it is generally expected that any participants who sign up for a workshop that involves spending time in the outdoors will own and bring the appropriate outdoor clothing.
