Durley Park Classroom, 950 South Hill St., Oxnard, California, 93033, United States.

Class meets 9:00am to Noon, Monday mornings for 6 weeks.

OGMS instructor Jean pSmith leads this class. Adults, 18 years and older only.

Please note, Class is full at 5, registration will close when that number is reached.

Chasing and repoussé are companion techniques that can be used to model and texture metal surfaces. These techniques are among the oldest metal-working processes known to man. Using simple tools and equipment, the artist can create amazing complex and rich surfaces that evoke image, pattern, shape and texture. Repoussé can be used as a basis for enameling, combined with hydraulic press forms, used as surface embellishment, create custom stone settings, holloware detailing and dimensional jewelry.

This class will employ techniques for low relief work, such as for small plates, plaques, jewelry pieces and small works. Come learn this fun, easy and addicting art form.

Unlike fabrication, there is little if any soldering. All work will be done in copper, but other metal options will be discussed. The student will learn to shape and heat treat a liner punch, make a sampler of textured patterns, a small figure plaque, and depending on their time management, complete at least one piece suitable for jewelry use. Tool & shop safety, maintainence and DIY methods will be discussed.

A PDF overview of the techniques, with resource links will be sent to registrants prior to class. PLEASE READ IT!

Materials:

This class will require the student to purchase a tool kit consisting of a pitch tray, copper sheet, tool steel blanks, hearing protection (foam) and bronze brazing rod. Artwork will be provided but students may also use their own. Kits will cost $50.

Chasing hammers will be available for use, and the class will have a selection of punches available to use in the classroom, however we cannot accomodate tool check-outs. If attendees have their own tools (punches, chasing hammers, heat gun, etc.) they are encouraged to bring them, please mark them well. Vision protection is recommended.
