54th Southwest Region Annual Meeting & Education Conference

This presentation focuses how nurses can prevent burn out in this highly competitive, tiring job with a focus on holistic measures.  Holistic health means that the body is a system which must be treated as a system rather than individual symptoms.  Since holistic health practices are not well known, information on what it is and how to implement its practices is given.  At the end of the presentation, participants will know the 4 components of holistic health and be able to describe at least one practice for prevention in that area.

This presentation will introduce an IR performance improvement project that implements “Standardized Workflows” as a building block towards equitable healthcare outcomes in IR. Our group decided to look at equity by asking each imaging modality, or specialty to come up with a DEI PIP (Performance Improvement Project) that would help our Radiology Department support ZSFGH’s mission statement “to provide equitable care to all”.

As health care expands utilizing the advances in healthcare and delivery, reaching an exponential population of people, its growth has become one of the fastest growing industries. Multiple factors are driving this growth. The earliest account of healthcare has its beginnings in homes rather that in institutions (ex. hospitals and clinics) that are pervasive today. With an aging population and significant changes in family dynamics, home health care services are in high demand. Advancements in technology have drastically improved the quality and efficiency of home health, allowing patients the flexibility of receiving care in the comfort of their home.

Nurse burnout or compassion fatigue is characterized by a reduction in energy, which manifests in feelings of frustration, demotivation, and emotional exhaustion. The COVID pandemic further illustrated the pressures that healthcare workers deal with on a daily basis, and as we begin to live in this post pandemic state, we are facing tremendous mental health crises. This presentation aims to provide tools for nursing students and professionals to recognize the signs of emotional fatigue and to adopt four tools that can aid in restoring and nurturing mental health: make time for PIES (physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual).

Public Health Nurses play a pivotal role in identifying and addressing health disparities and inequities in communities. They utilized the principles of Public Health and Populations Health to assess and implement changes in these communities. Public Health and Population Health are identified as two different entities. This presentation will introduce its audience to Public Health and Population Health, compare the terms and determine if they terms are interchangeable. Most importantly it will demonstrate how Public Health Nurses implement these principles as they lead the charge into health equity.

Objective: The purpose of this presentation is to define mentoring, the impact of mentorship programs, and how to implement a mentorship program for nurse practitioners (NP).  

Background: The history of mentors has been traced back over 3000 years to Homer’s Odyssey.  Mentoring has been a concept since the inception of nursing. Florence Nightingale introduced the concept of mentoring in nursing when she began personal visits with the staff and probationers at the Nightingale School in London. The use of mentorships began to increase in the 1970’s with organizations noting the value of mentors in the workplace. Currently, novice RN and NPs are leaving the profession within 6-18 months of entering practice, citing lack of support with role transition.

Methods: A mentorship program was developed using the guiding principles listed in The Mentoring Manual by Julie Starr for novice NPs in a Federally Qualified Health Care Facility (FQHC).

Conclusion: The NPs who participated in the mentorship in the mentorship program at the FQHC reported a sense of support, increased confidence, and job satisfaction. Providing a mentorship program will not only benefit the individual but also have a positive impact on the organization.
