In February 2020, Babcock Center, Inc will celebrate 50 years as an agency incorperated. Prior to 1970, Babcock Center's founder, Mary L. Duffie, had devoted herself to providing daycare to three small children with intellectual disabillities in the basement of her church. With assistance from Dr. James Woods Babcock and lots of hard work, Mary would launched the first community residential services for adults with developmental disabilities. What began in a church basement and grew to a community of supports in 1970 is now the largest nonprofit provider of support services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Richland and Lexington Counties.
