This 1 1/2 day program will provide an overview of the recent advances in nerve injury, healing, repair, reconstruction and rehabilitation and understand current principles and practice of nerve reconstruction.

Format : Lectures, videos, case-based discussions and hands-on practical. Online resources will be made available for pre-reading. There will be twelve stations with bench operating microscope and fresh frozen cadaveric specimen. Two participants per station. Each station is equipped with basic surgical instruments and two sets of complimentary surgical loupes with headlights and 3 piece micro instruments.

Application for 12 CME points by Singapore Medical Council to be made.

Target Participants (limited to max of 24) : Senior residents/Consultants in hand /ortho /plastic surgery

Prerequisites: All participants will be required to have attended a microsurgery course prior. They must be familiar with loupe dissection and neurorrhaphy using microscopes.

At the end of the lecture the participant will be able to:

 

  1. Understand the principles of nerve transfer and its role in upper limb reanimation.

  2. Describe the process of common nerve transfers in lower motor lesion of the upper limb

  3. Develop a management strategy for common BPI and spinal cord injury patients.

 

13.30pm - 14.00 pm Outcomes in nerve transfer surgery Mr Sandeep Sebastian

 

At the end of the lecture the participant will be able to:

 

  1. Describe the factors affecting outcomes and provide prognostication

  2. List the current evidence for outcomes in nerve transfer surgery

  3. Describe the evaluation methods in nerve transfer surgery and their limitations

 

14.00 – 1430 Principles of nerve transfer rehabilitation Mr Andrew Yam

 

At the end of the lecture the participant will be able to:

 

1. Understand the principles of nerve rehabilitation 

2. Understand the concept of the plasticity of the brain and its role in rehabilitation

3. Functional assessment of nerve functions and return to work strategies

At the end of this lecture the participant will be able to understand and describe nerve reconstruction surgery in: -

 

  1. Peripheral nerve injury upper limb

  2. Peripheral nerve injury lower limb 

  3. Spinal cord injury

  4. Degenerative spinal disease
