2022 NASW-Iowa Chapter Annual Symposium

In this workshop, participants will review the NASW Code of Ethics, highlighting updates from the last few years. Tools for screening potential ethical dilemmas will be introduced. We will then discuss what role a code of ethics that was historically based in European-American values can play as the profession embraces an anti-racist perspective.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be:

·        Aware of updates that were made to the NASW Code of Ethics in the last several years.

·        Able to identify what constitutes and ethical dilemma and how to assess the situation.

·        Able to discuss how the NASW Code of Ethics can be supported or challenged by an anti-racist perspective.

Social workers are accountable to help bring about transformative justice. To do so, they have to understand what White supremacy is, its impacts and how to interrupt White supremacy’s oppressive processes and actions. To make the self-reflective and professional journey we need resources and supports to keep going and growing. This workshop will help you on your journey of being a serious changemaker. 

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Understand what white supremacy is and our own personal connection.
• Learn how to be an interrupter of racist and other oppressive processes and actions at micro, mezzo, and macro levels.
•  Identify resources and opportunities for personal and professional growth as an antiracist social worker

This workshop will aim to educate and empower providers to better serve families involved in DHS.  The presentation will cover common terms and acronyms, parties typical to a case, the DHS process from intake to closure, the court process from removal to closure, relevant legislation, services, tips, and mental health factors to consider. 

 At the end of the workshop, participants should be more familiar with the terms and parties involved in DHS, services available to clients, and the DHS and Child In Need of Assistance (CINA) process.

In this workshop, participants will discuss the neurodivergent diagnosis, increase their general knowledge and discuss the barriers present with this population. You will explore the differences between children and adults with this diagnosis, explore sexuality for neurodivergent populations and intersectional aspects which impact this population. Participants will develop skills to increase their level of comfort when working with neurodivergent clients in a clinical setting.

 Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have an increased:

• Awareness of barriers fro neurodivergent populations.

• Network resources.

• Clinical comfort with exploring aspects of functioning.

• Clinical interventions and modalities which, anecdotally and research based, postively impact functioning.

This presentation will outline the justice gap and numerous systemic barriers for marginalized individuals in our community. We will outline one of our solutions to meet the needs through the creation of the Community Schools Project which add social workers to the legal team. This new service delivery model features onsite legal clinics paired with the social services support to shift away from a triage-based approach.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to understand the current gaps in our justice system and how interdisciplinary teams help increase client outcomes.

This presentation will provide an in-depth look at the cultural and generational traumas that have formed part of the LGBTQ community as well as explore different therapeutic interventions that can be implemented when working with LGBTQ clients.  Individuals will also learn what it means to be an advocate for the LGBTQ community as well as how to advocate.

 Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

• Develop an understanding of the need for restorative and reparative interventions for individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.
• Learn cultural trauma interventions that can be incorporated into treatment planning when working with LGBTQ clients.
• Learn what it means and how to advocate for clients who are LGBTQ

By establishing an awareness of ethical responsibilities, understanding the risks associated with providing clinical supervision along with the basic professional practice participants will better prepared to avoid and manage potentially difficult ethical problems and dilemmas.

Upon completion of this workshop participants will:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the important ethical issues related to clinical supervision.
• Identify strategies for incorporating ethical responsibilities into practice.
• Ascertain the ethical and legal risks associated with the role of a clinical supervisor.
• Develop skills to limit those risks when possible.

This panel and interactive learning session will focus on the issues that typically face systems-involved and kinship students as they work towards graduating from high school and transitioning to college or careers. Participants will learn about the barriers that frequently exist for systems-involved students at the national level, including an emphasis on equity, and then examine data related to Iowa’s youth population. Participants will be provided with resources and strategies utilizing various agencies and community supports.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

• Understand the challenges frequently encountered by foster care and system-involved youth related to post- secondary opportunities.
• Explore a variety of institutions and resources that can help support these students as they prepare to transition out of high school and out of care systems.
• Develop an awareness of how to support high school completion and transitions for systems-involved students.
• Receive information regarding opportunities for additional training and CEUs.

As Play Therapists/Child Therapists we are often asked to work within the court system.  We will review our ethical obligation to advocate for our client, our professional responsibilities to share our expertise and how to communicate, collaborate and educate effectively and confidently within the system.

• Feel more confident about their role, how "leaning in" aligns with their ethics and advocacy for their clients, tools and techniques to writing letters to the courts, testifying and participating in systemic meetings

This presentation covers the ethical imperative of provider wellbeing and research on risk factors of poor professional quality of life. Attendees will receive materials for provider self-assessment of wellbeing and learn to apply somatic practices to restore wellbeing and enhance provider resilience.

 Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

• Increase their knowledge and enhance awareness of symptoms and indications of poor professional quality of life.
• Understand the ethical imperative of self-care and the potential for harm posed by low professional quality of life.
• Receive knowledge and materials to apply for a professional self-awareness and self-assessment of professional quality of life.
• Learn and be able to utilize somatic practices to restore provider wellbeing and enhance professional resiliency.

The RISE: Wellness & Resilience Framework guides providers on how to integrate resilience factors into the workplace setting. In this presentation, we will explore how providers can honor authentic relationships rooted in emotional intelligence in order to increase their own indicators of well-being such as, safety, connection and belonging, meaning and purpose and efficacy and reduce burnout.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will identify:

• Key components of resilience and well-being.
• And practice the use of reflection and connection to explore and cultivate your own EQ.
• The conditions needed to cultivate and integrate day to day activities related to increasing ones sense of safety, connection & belonging, meaning & purpose, and efficacy in the workplace.
