The 2021 WSBA conference features keynote speaker Mark Scharenbroich, award-winning author and motivational speaker, along with Steph Davis, professional rock climber, BASE jumper, and wingsuit flyer. This event will also include multiple breakout sessions, student performances, awards ceremonies, and the annual legal update from Tracy Copenhaver and Scott Kolpitcke. Steph started climbing when she was a freshman at the University of Maryland in 1991. She is one of the world's leading climbers, having completed some of the hardest routes in the world. She is the first woman to have free soloed a 5.11 grade climb, the first woman to summit all the peaks of the Fitzroy Range in Patagonia, the second woman to free climb El Capitan in a day, the first woman to free climb the Salathe Wall on El Capitan, the first woman to free solo The Diamond on Longs Peak in Colorado, and the first woman to summit Torre Egger.

Dr. Kessler has been serving the Wyoming School Boards Association the past three years as the Director of Leadership Development. Rod spends most of his training time in local school district settings with board members and administration that make up the District Leadership Team. His background includes 35 years of teaching and administration. The majority of Rod’s career was spent in Wyoming in Sweetwater School District No. 2 (SCSD#2) for 11 years and Johnson County School District No. 1 (JCSD#1) for 16 years, where he retired in 2014 after 16 years as Superintendent for JCSD#1. Dr. Kessler believes the keys to Extraordinarily Successful School Districts are centered around Quality Relationships and Clear Roles and Responsibilities for all the team players.

A life-long learner and educator since 1973, Sue moved from the Midwest to Wyoming over 45 years ago. After serving Sheridan County School District #1 in a variety of capacities (instructional coach, curriculum director, special education director, middle school principal, superintendent) she began her first retirement in 2011. Not proficient in retirement yet and not finished learning, Sue has been exploring new opportunities in the field of education by working as a dean and vice-president of academic affairs at Northern Wyoming Community College District, serving as WSBA’s Director of Leadership Development, coaching leaders and leadership teams, and participating as a member of the Wyoming State Board of Education.

Tracy Copenhaver is the senior partner in Copenhaver, Kath, Kitchen & Kolpitcke, LLC. He graduated from the University of Wyoming Law School in 1982. Tracy is licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of Wyoming, as well as the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Current areas of practice include: insurance defense work for all liability claims, as well as public entity representation. Tracy does a considerable amount of work in education law and defense of public employers and employees.

Cory is the superintendent of Platte County School District #1. His father was an administrator for 44 years and always said that there are other things out there that do not involve administration. Well, you know how well a son listens to his father! Cory is a retired science teacher, building administrator for 10 years, and currently in his second year as a superintendent. Prior to teaching, he worked in Antarctica as a blaster and Ice Runway Supervisor. Those careers were his first taste of leadership and what better situation to learn than working with 700 pounds of ANFO Explosives on an active volcano? Cory is excited to utilize his leadership experiences to enhance the leadership team at #onePlatte1.

Janine Bay Teske had a 25-year career as an auto executive for Ford Motor Company where her responsibilities ranged from starting Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT), targeting the performance enthusiast with high performance vehicle and Chief Engineer for the Ford Mustang. She is currently in her 5th term as a school board member in Teton County and spends her time advocating for education for the students in Wyoming. Janine has served on NSBA Policies and Resolutions Committee and on NSBAC for four years. In 2018, Janine was elected to the NSBA Board of Directors from the Western Region where she has served as a co-chair of the Policy and Resolutions Committee, on the Constitution and Bylaws Committee and on the Policy Committee.

Brian Farmer is the executive director of the Wyoming School Boards Association (WSBA), a position he has held since 2014. As a former school board member, Mr. Farmer is a strong advocate for public education and high-quality educational opportunities for all students. Mr. Farmer also serves as the chair of the Organization of State Association Executive Directors and is a member of the board of directors for the National School Boards Association. Mr. Farmer previously worked for the Wyoming Legislature and the University of Wyoming. Brian has taught in the Departments of Political Science and Criminal Justice at UW as well as courses in the College of Business and College of Education. He is recognized as an expert on education policy and law.
