Welcome to the first Virtual CEAV Conference, Career Education – Knowing, Helping & Action!  

 

This year we have taken precautionary steps to ensure the safety of CEAV members and staff as we continue to navigate the uncertainty of a global pandemic. Our program is none the less engaging and focussed heavily on exploring how to deliver career education in our schools. Over two and a half days, we will be turning the spotlight on career education programs, strategies, and services as we look at how to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and leaders in our schools.

 

CEAV members along with our internationally recognised career education experts will share their knowledge and expertise with delegates. We will look at Knowing our craft and the methods and theories that underpin career education, Helping our students to manage change and transition and how to Action our professional profile in our schools to build better, and more targeted careers services for all.

The Hon Minister James Merlino
Deputy Premier of Victoria and Minister for Education

In November, 2002 James was first elected to Parliament as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Monbulk. James was also a member of the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee between 2003 and 2006. Following the 2006 state election, James became Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs in the Bracks Labor Government. During this period James was also appointed with the additional responsibility of Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs. As the son of a migrant, James’ tenure as Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs was personally significant and provided James with the opportunity to support Victoria’s vibrant multicultural society. James was Shadow Minister for Police and Shadow Minister for the TAC and Road Safety between December 2010 up until February 2012. That same month James was named Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Education. Following Labor’s victory at the 2014 state election, it was an honour for James to be sworn in as Deputy Premier and Minister for Education in the Andrews Labor Government. In 2016, James also became the Minister for Emergency Services. James was honoured to again be sworn in as Deputy Premier and Minister for Education in the Andrews Government following the 2018 state election. James was sworn in as Minister for Mental Health in September 2020 and as Acting Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers in October 2021.

He is a two-term Chair of the Association of BC Deans of Education and led the development of the ACDE Accord on Internationalization in Education.

Michael has been involved in the career development field as a counsellor, practitioner, trainer, and counsellor educator since the early 1990s. He is a Registered Psychologist, counsellor, and associate professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where he provides counselling addressing personal, educational, and career-related concerns. Michael continues to teach graduate courses and facilitate practitioner workshops focused on counselling skills and intervention strategies. His areas of interest and exploration include counsellor training, career intervention, stress and coping, and counselling outcomes and evaluation. He is particularly interested in the various connections between career development, mental health, mental illness, and wellbeing.

Dr Mary McMahon is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Education at The University of Queensland. With a background in secondary school education and career guidance, Mary has worked in the field of career development for over 30 years. She is the developer and co-author of the internationally recognised Systems Theory Framework of Career Development which takes a holistic ‘individual in context’ view of career development. A focus of her work has been the application of systems thinking and systems mapping to career theory, research and practice. Mary researches career development across the lifespan and narrative and systems approaches to career counselling and qualitative career assessment. Mary is particularly interested in the career development of children and adolescents and how career education can support them. She is also interested in assisting school personnel develop skills and knowledge in career education.

He has served both as Secretary and President of the Knox Careers Group, as a member of the CEAV Committee of Management, and is currently the Secretary of the CEAV Executive Committee.
