The Au Train to Superior Challenge is an MCRA-qualified canoe race with sections on a deep water lake and a lively, challenging river.
Put in at Au Train Lake Campground boat launch and paddle into the south bay of Au Train Lake (approximately 1 mile from launch to the starting line. Expert 2 will start first, with Expert 1 starting a few minutes later.
Finish at Au Train Beach, just upstream of M-28 at the kayak launch. Take out on the left side of river.
Briefing and registration will be online- check back for details.
Race will be approximately 1 hour 35 minutes for the winners. Prize money and goodies will be handed out as soon as possible after the race- no formal awards ceremony will be held.
Housekeeping: Participants are encouraged to wear a mask while on shore before and after the race.
The course does start on a lake, so in the off chance that it is breezy at 8:30 AM from the South or East, you could need a bow cover for the 2 1/2 miles of the course on open water. There will be a safety boat in case people need assistance.
If you have a chance to arrive on Friday, check out the last 20 minutes of the race course from Au Train Forest Lake Road bridge to Au Train Beach. The river is braided at this point. The biggest shortcut is just upstream of this bridge, so paddle up around that island to see that part of the course.
