2 day conference about Teaching for Artistic Behaviors (TAB)

January 19-20th

Keynote Speakers: Juile Toole and Cynthia Gaub

Cynthia Gaub has been Teaching FOR Artistic Behavior in a variety of modified and full-choice ways since 2004. Her middle school students vary from year to year in her urban, high poverty, high English Learner and high special education population... so the way she offers choices changes with them. Blogging and Presenting at state and national conventions since 2000, she has packed out rooms for her "Around the Room" presentations in many locations. She has shared her lessons, student art and games on www.artechtivity.com (and formerly www.thevirtualclassroom.org) as well as publishing in many arts education magazines, and contributing to TAB books, including "Studio Habits" and "Engaging Learners." As she transitions from Washington Art Education Associations's Co-president into the NAEA Choice Interest group's Co-president Elect, she will begin to share her techniques and TAB style in other states. For Colorado, she will share her journey with TAB and Choice from the beginning till now.

A 20 year veteran of Chicago Public Schools, Julie Toole currently teaches teaches 1st-8th grade at Baker Demonstration School, a private, progressive school in IL. She had been a TAB teacher for 10 years and is a member of the Teaching for Artistic Behavior National Leadership Team and board. She has written many articles about her TAB practice, is a frequent presenter at the state and national level and is part of the faculty at the Summer TAB Institute in Boston each summer with TAB founders, Kathy Douglas and Diane Jaquith. Her studio classroom was featured in Studio Thinking from the Start (Hogan, Hetland, Jaquith and Winner), the updated book on Studio Habits of Mind for the Elementary Classroom. She is a passionate advocate and champion for creativity and play and creates community and parent/child events that combine these loves. She is a trans-racially adoptive parent and working towards becoming a stronger ally for her daughters, students and staff of color and the LGBTQ+ community. She started a GSA club (Gender Sexuality Alliance) at her school and facilitates an elective called "Artist as Activist" for her middle school students.
