This course is for those who have held their LCSW for at least 3 years and who wish to supervise New Jersey LSWs seeking their clinical hours.
For those licensed in NY: NASW New Jersey Chapter SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0138. This course does not necessarily meet supervision requirements in the state of New York.
Fundamentals of Supervision - DAY ONE
This workshop will provide a brief overview of the history of supervision and will identify its role in meeting the current demands of the practice environment. The information supplied will be based on sound practice principals and will offer a comprehensive framework for understanding the administrative, educational and supportive functions of supervision. Discussion will center on the supervisory tasks of staff recruitment and retention, the management of workloads, task delegation and coordination, and worker performance, as well as the roles and responsibilities inherent in educational and supportive supervision. Specific phases in the development of the supervisor-supervisee relationship, learning patterns and styles, the parallel process, as well as supervisory and leadership styles will be identified and explored as two models for supervisory practice are discussed. Conflicts arising in supervision will be discussed and a framework for their resolution will be provided. Supervisory skills and techniques will be highlighted throughout.
Legal and Ethical Issues in Supervision - DAY TWO
During this presentation, the NASW Code of Ethics will be used as a guide to identify the values and ethical underpinnings of the profession that guide, support and direct supervisory practice. Difficulties associated with boundary violations, dual relationships, confidentiality, professional competence, duty to warn, informed consent, and fair evaluative practices will be discussed and highlighted with case examples. Supervisory liability (known as "vicarious liability”) will be explored. Strategies to minimize risk and liability will be discussed during a review of landmark cases and New Jersey law.
Cultural Competency in Supervision - DAY THREE
Using both experiential and theoretical approaches, broad themes of cultural competence will be covered as they relate to ethnicity, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, physical and mental ability and social class. Through the use of small and large group exercises, participants will begin to recognize the assumptions, attitudes, biases and misconceptions that inhibit communication about cultural differences within the supervisory relationship. Factors that facilitate cultural awareness and competence, and a framework for their inclusion in supervision will be provided.
