New Jersey is a national hub for human trafficking.  It occurs in all of our communities, but most people don’t recognize it when they encounter it.  Human trafficking doesn’t have a typical demographic; it knows no ethnicity, gender or age.  Up to 82% of trafficking survivors report that they had contact with healthcare professionals, including mental health professionals, while they were actively being trafficked.  The professionals failed to recognize the signs of trafficking and failed to help the victims.

Learn what to look for, how to report potential trafficking, and how to approach victims therapeutically to help them become survivors.  Case illustrations will be presented.

Learning objectives:  At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

1.Explain what human trafficking is

2.Describe how human trafficking occurs in New Jersey

3.Assess signs of human trafficking in patient populations

4.Identify risk factors for clients to become trafficking victims

5.Utilize effective treatment approaches to help trafficking survivors
