Marijuana was legalized for recreational purposes in New Jersey through a ballot initiative in 2020, and approved by the governor in 2021. During this webinar, we will review the important advocacy work that led us to this significant step towards reducing the harms of the racist drug war. We will also review existing research on the effects of recreational legalization in states that have already fully implemented this policy. The presentation will end with tangible strategies on what this new law means for social workers specifically, and what we can do to best educate our clients and communities.

 Objectives:

1. Understand the advocacy efforts that went into this important legislation to reinforce how valuable the outcomes of this new law will be for communities most impacted by the drug war.

2. Explore the effects of marijuana legalization in other states/countries.

3. Build awareness of educational strategies to prepare clients, families and communities for the presence of legalized marijuana in NJ

For those licensed in NY: NASW New Jersey Chapter SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0138. She also recently finished a study exploring how the use of Narcan to save someone’s life or have one’s own life saved affects drug use behavior change in the future. Now, she is actively working to promote harm reduction and a shift from a criminal justice to public health-based approach to drug use in New Jersey.
