Culturally Competent Care of Transgender, Nonbinary, and
Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) Clients for Cisgender Clinicians 102: Transgender Advocacy
The transgender population is arguably the most marginalized of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the larger community, in terms of access to healthcare, incidence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), disproportionate legal jeopardy, homelessness, un/underemployment, poverty, substance addiction, and a host of other social marginalities. Social workers who encounter transgender persons often find them in conditions of extreme distress and are called upon to provide the highest quality, culturally competent intervention and advocacy.
Using the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care as a guide, this presentation will:
- (1) review current best-practices for service and intervention with the Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Non-Conforming community
- (2) learn, adopt, and apply culturally competent standards recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care in their social work practice
- (3) discuss practical means of advocating for the equity and inclusion of Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Non-Conforming clients.
