Vicarious trauma (or secondary traumatic stress) is an ongoing process of change over time that results from witnessing or hearing about other people’s suffering and need. When social workers identify with the pain of people who have endured terrible things, they can bring their grief, fear, anger, and despair into their own awareness and experience. Vicarious trauma, like experiencing trauma directly, can deeply impact the way social workers see the world and can put them at risk for burnout and compassion fatigue.
This webinar will be help you:
1. Identify the difference between trauma and vicarious trauma
2. Identify warning signs of vicarious trauma
Identify tools and techniques for caring for yourself and your staff/colleagues before, during and after burnout and/or compassion fatigue.

Prior to that she was a Behavioral Health Social Worker for Henry J. Austin Health Center (HJAC) in Trenton, NJ – A Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) for 11 years. Lynn is an Intensive In Community (IIC) Therapist for young people through New Jersey’s Perform Care and Partners for Kids and Family – UCM. She also operates her own private practice of counseling and therapy. Lynn’s passion is helping people help themselves – no matter what age or stage they are in. God has blessed her to be the founder and sole counselor for It’s Okay To Exhale, LLC, a counseling ministry that allows any and everyone who needs or wants to exhale, the opportunity to do so through sharing, venting, and studying God’s Word in a forum that’s safe from judgment or criticism. Lynn graduated from Rutgers University, the State University of NJ’s School of Social Work in 2007 with her Bachelors of Social Work and in 2008 with her Masters in Social Work. Lynn is so excited to be participating in the NASW-NJ’s Health Care Social Worker’s Symposium. Presenting on the topic of Vicarious Trauma will allow Lynn to share the facts about Burnout and Compassion Fatigue while giving helpful hints on preserving you, the Health Care Social Worker through self-care.
