Friday, 6 March 2020 7:00 AM - 2:30 PM EST

Sinclair College - Conference Center Building 12, 444 West Third Street, Dayton, OH, 45402, United States.

We are currently at capacity for the 2020 Readiness Summit. We expect cancellations, so please sign up on our waiting list and we will let you know if spots become available. Thank you for your interest in the Readiness Summit!

For more than a decade, we've been examining the gaps in our children's educational achievements and delving into the range of factors that make up this complex picture. We've been exploring emerging theories; we've been sharing resources from our community and beyond. This year, we will look at what each of us can do to build connections with our children. Because, as we continue to learn, equity – and school success – starts with relationships, with that one teacher, that one adult, who cares.

Mark your calendars for 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 6, at Sinclair College, to hear our speaker Dwayne "D.J." Batiste and explore how we can build the connections with children and adults that will help us begin to eliminate racial and gender gaps. In addition to D.J., we will have a wonderful group of skilled facilitators, to help us move from reflection (“Let's Talk”) to action (“Let's Act!”).

The Summit is free. Join more than 500 community leaders; school board members and other elected officials; superintendents; home visitors; librarians; nonprofit leaders; childcare, after-school and summer providers; preschool teachers; K-12 principals and administrators; and prenatal to age 3 professionals.

Participants are invited to bring a book that will be given to a low-income child, birth to 3rd grade.

We are very excited to introduce our keynote speaker, Dwayne “D.J.” Batiste. D.J. knows well the challenges faced by many of our children. Born to a 14-year-old mother and 16-year-old father, he was raised by his grandmother in Picayune, Mississippi. Involved with gangs and drugs, he had little interest in school, was suspended countless times and banished to alternative schools. His future looked bleak. Until he met Mrs. Porter. D.J. tells the story of the teacher who, in his senior year of high school, turned his life around. Mrs. Donna Porter, who had been trained in Conscious Discipline, “tricked him,” he says, “by responding with attention in positive ways rather than through punishment.” He graduated from high school in 2010, walking arm-in-arm to the ceremony with Mrs. Porter. Since then, he's worked with Mrs. Porter training other teachers and become a celebrated motivational speaker in his own right.
