“The role of FMs in facilitating access for People of Determination” ?

What is it about?
Facility Managers have a crucial role to play in maintaining the accessibility of buildings for People of Determination. Drawing on examples from the UK and Europe along with the United Arab Emirates, Steve will outline what new legislative changes means for Facility Managers. Some no-cost recommendations will be outlined for participants to implement that will enhance accessibility. This fits in with the vision of the United Arab Emirates for a more inclusive society for People of Determination.

Guest Speaker: Steve Dering, Head of Engagement, Direct Access

 

Profoundly deaf since birth, Steve Dering joined Direct Access two years ago having previously worked as a fire risk consultant advising organisations on evacuation for People of Determination. His Masters dissertation at the UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University focused on the perceptions of People of Determination in evacuation methodologies and has been the subject of academic conferences in Europe. He is a full Member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management.He has worked in Dubai since 2018 and moved to the city in January 2019 advising organisations on the Dubai Universal Design Code. He has worked with both architectural firms on new developments and those managing existing developments. He has published articles on accessibility and the Dubai Universal Design Code as well as presented on the subject at events across the region.Direct Access was established in the UK in 2004 and started working in the United Arab Emirates in 2017 following the introduction of the Dubai Universal Design Code. Millions of people every day use a building or service that Direct Access has advised on accessibility.
