White Water Safety and Rescue Training (WWSR)

The White Water Safety and Rescue Training is designed for all paddlers operating in white water environment, either in a kayak or canoe.

Becoming a Provider

Coaches wishing to become a WWSR Provider are required to complete a provider logbook. This is open to updated coaches with the following qualifications:

Coaching qualification (any of the following)Advanced Water Leader Award (any of the following)
British Canoeing Level 3 Coach Advanced Water Leader Award (White Water or Open Canoe), held for minimum 3 years
British Canoeing Performance Coach (White Water or Open Canoe) Advanced Water Leader Award (White Water or Open Canoe), held for minimum 3 years
British Canoeing Moderate Water Coach Award (White Water or Open Canoe) Advanced Water Leader Award (White Water or Open Canoe), held for minimum 3 years

The logbook process requires the aspirant provider to complete the following (in order):

  1. Attend an Orientation event. This course is spent running through the WWSR syllabus and trainer’s notes, with at least half of the course spent on the water, ensuring that participants are conversant with the safety issues, key learning points and are able to provide accurate demonstrations. Participants design their own action plan that is discussed and agreed with their training provider. The action plan is written into their WWSR Provider Logbook. A training provider will sign the logbook to verify training has been completed.
  2. Complete an action plan, including working on / observing courses with existing providers. For candidates wishing to deliver the course in the craft for which they do not hold an Advanced Water Leader award, the action plan will include an extra days training in that craft. In addition, the action plan will contain the requirement to prepare a written risk assessment, which will be provided to the National Trainer. This risk assessment should form the basis of the risk disclosure that WWSR Providers will provide for their students. A template is available on request.
  3. Assessed Delivery – arrange for an existing provider to assess your delivery of a WWSR Course.

On completion of the above tasks, the logbook should be returned to the Home Nation for verification and registration as a WWSR Provider.

If you are fully updated and meet the prerequisites above, please secure your place at an Orientation event.  Once your place has been confirmed, you will be sent a logbook.
