Working with Couples:  Can’t Live With You, Can’t Live Without You

Thursday, November 8 | 7:00 to 8:30 PM

Details

We have also seen them in our practices, couples who communicate chronic bitterness, anger, and blame. These couples say things like, “We have not agreed on things for years,” frequently threaten divorcing, yet cling to one another tenaciously. This session explores the dynamics underlying the hostile, symbiotic and dependent couples along with strategies that contain their hostility and promote maturation.  The important work of managing the countertransference will also be examined.

Presenter:

Frances Bigda-Peyton, Ed.D., Cert.Psya. is on  the teaching and research faculty of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis.  She has over 35 years of clinical experience, has advance couples training at the Gottman Institute, the Cambridge Family Institute and the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Continuing Education Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and explore the clinical dynamics underlying hostile, symbiotic and dependent couples.
  2. Identify and discuss strategies that contain hostility and promote maturation.
  3. Identify and examine countertransference reactions that will assist the therapist in managing and working effectively with these dynamics.
